Do You Know What Your Child is Doing 7 Hours a Day?
Hint: It has nothing to do with sleeping.
A report released this week by the Kaiser Foundation report troubling and startling findings regarding our children’s use of mobile media.
My primary concern, having observed children in my family, friends and others is that many of these technologies are now replacing or superceding face to face human contact.
This past summer when my goddaughter visited with us, I asked her not to text while we were eating dinner and visiting with her. It was too intrusive, and we were denied a critical component of our human beingness.
She reluctantly obliged, and I think by the end her stay, had a new appreciation for our primary form of communication—talking!
Media is here to say, but in my opinion is no substitute or replacement for human interaction. I use it as an occasional convenience and rarely text-as I’d rather talk.
Even more concerning is that most children say they have no rules!! Parents are asleep at the wheel.
Years ago, a study found that the mere act of eating dinner as a family has a tremendous impact
I am also concerned about the chronic use of these technologies on the development of joints, arthritis and visual difficulties.
DAILY MEDIA USE AMONG CHILDREN AND TEENS UP DRAMATICALLY FROM FIVE YEARS AGO
